How Marital Affair works

Four stages, two of them free, and one thing worth knowing before you write a word of your profile.

In short

Marital Affair is a discreet dating site for married and attached adults aged 18 and over. Joining, creating a profile, browsing and receiving interest are free; reading and replying to messages needs a paid membership that renews until you cancel. Profiles are shared with partner sites in the same network, and checkout shows the billing name before you pay.

1. Create an account

Signing up takes an email address, a password and your date of birth. You must be 18 or over; members in Alabama, Mississippi, Nebraska or Wyoming must be 21. Use an email address you are happy to receive account messages at, because password resets and other account emails go there.

ID verification is not required by default. Some sign-ups are asked to verify before they can carry on, for example if you join through a VPN or the account is flagged. The check is run by LEM Verify and uses a photo of your ID and a selfie. Everyone else can add the same check later as an optional paid badge.

2. Build a profile, at your own pace

Your profile is a username, photos and a few lines about what you are looking for. You will usually be asked for at least one photo. Every photo is reviewed before it appears; nudity and lingerie shots are not accepted. What members write about themselves is not checked by anyone, so the same caution applies to the profiles you read.

You can also set who you are looking for, the age range and distance, and details such as languages, children, smoking and drinking. Fill in only what you are comfortable with.

Before you write anything, know who will read it. A partner site is another dating site in the same network that shares one member database, so members who joined through another site can see your profile and message you. Our discretion page and the profile privacy guide cover what to show and what to leave out.

3. Browse and show interest, free

Browsing profiles costs nothing, and neither does receiving interest from other members. This is the time to get a feel for who is around and whether the site suits you, before you spend anything. Free members see adverts.

4. Pay when you want to talk

Reading and replying to messages needs a paid membership. The options are on the prices page, and checkout shows the price and the billing name that will appear on your card statement before you pay.

Memberships renew automatically until you cancel, which you do in Settings > Billing. Cancelling stops future payments; it does not delete your profile. To leave entirely, click your avatar, open Settings and choose Delete Account. The step-by-step version is in cancelling or deleting your account.

What happens once you are talking

Conversations stay inside your account. There are no published response times and no guarantee that any particular member will reply, so don't pay expecting a set number of conversations.

Take your time with new contacts. Someone who rushes you towards another app, asks for money or wants intimate photos early is a reason to stop, not to hurry. The safety page explains the warning signs and where to report them.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

Marital Affair suits adults who are married or attached, want discreet adult company, and are willing to take their time and look after their own privacy and safety. It is not the right place if you are under 18, looking for a marriage partner, hoping to find out whether a particular person is a member, or unsure what you want. If that last one is you, questions to ask yourself first is a better starting point, and how affair websites work puts this site in the context of the wider market.

Questions people ask

Can members of other sites see my profile?

Yes. Profiles are shared with partner sites in the same network, so members who joined through those sites can see your profile and message you, and profiles show which site a member joined through. Choose photos and details with that wider audience in mind.

Do I have to verify my ID?

Usually not. ID verification is an optional paid badge, run by LEM Verify with a photo of your ID and a selfie. It is required only for some sign-ups, for example if you join through a VPN or your account is flagged for a check.

Can I reply to a message without paying?

No. Reading and replying to messages need a paid membership. Receiving interest from other members and browsing profiles are free, so you can judge whether there is anyone you want to talk to before you spend anything.

Which countries can join?

The members area accepts sign-ups from the UK, the US, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Portugal, plus Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Most members are in the UK and the US.

Does cancelling delete my profile?

No. Cancelling in Settings > Billing only stops future payments; your profile stays until you delete it. To remove it, click your avatar, open Settings and choose Delete Account, after cancelling any membership.
